Presentation W.J. McElroy Sword, presented to Lieut. Hardy H. Williamson of the Campbell County Sharpshooters. The Campbell County Sharpshooters were formed at Flat Rock, Georgia by Sheriff William M. McGouirk. The men, natives of Campbell (now Douglas) County, were predominantly farmers by trade. Along with nine other units, they were directed to assemble at Camp Bailey, near Fairburn, Georgia. On September 25, 1861, the units were formally organized into military companies, and the Campbell County Sharpshooters were officially designated Company F. Among company officers elected was one Hardy H. Williamson, then 22, who was chosen First Sergeant. This exquisite sword was presented to Williamson by his company, after promotion to First Lieutenant, two months prior to his death at the Battle of Atlanta. More information to follow.
