Remington Model 1863 Percussion Contract Rifle

Mint condition Model 1863 “Zouave Rifle.” noted as being one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War. Produced by the Remington Arms firm of ILIion, New York between 1862 and 1865. Manufactured in .58 caliber, 33 inch barrel with full bluing present, fastened with 2 brass barrel bands, brass trigger guard and patch box. Untouched patina, with deep and clear cartouches on left side of stock, opposite lockplate. Lock marked with Wingspread Eagle, under the bolster with “US”, “REMINGTON&146;S  / U.S. ILIon, N.Y.” to right of eagle, with rear lock plate dated 1863. Barrel marked “Steel” on left rear flat of the breech, with V/P eaglehead. Tang of butt plate marked US, 1855 style rear site, steel blade dovetailed front site, correct ramrod and bayonet lug. Two government cartouches prominent on flat opposite lockplate, with all areas properly stamped with sub-inspector marks. This example is in 95% original “as new” condition.  Considered to be the nucleus for any collection featuring U.S. Martial percussion longarms.
